In a new project called Second Nature, Rotterdam based research and design studio The New Raw in collaboration with Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation in Athens aim to raise awareness of marine plastic pollution by 3D printing shells and objects from collected discarded fishing nets.

The Second Nature project begins with the collection and sorting of the ghost gear depending on material type: nets, ropes, floaters or weights. The plastic waste is then processed in a grinder to create colourful and textured filament for the 3D printing projects.
