Aivan has designed a pair of headphones exclusively from microbially grown materials to showcase the potential of synthetic biology in the form of a three-dimensional object. Each part of the headset uses microbe-grown materials with different properties. The rigid material used for the frame of the headphones is a petroleum-free, 3d-printed bio plastic, the ear padding is made using a fungus. Covering the foam is root-like part of a fungus with leathery texture to sit comfortably on the ears and mesh-like cover is provided by a microbially produced protein.
